Lab Safety

Everything the lab needs to work safely, in one place. Emergency numbers first, then training, chemicals and documents.

In an emergency

Emergency, any threat to life 911 Fire, serious injury, large or unknown spill
Duke Police, non-emergency 919-684-2444 Suspicious activity, after-hours building problems

Safety in this lab

If something happens

The first minute matters more than the paperwork. Do these, then tell someone.

Chemical on skin or in eyes

Get to the safety shower or eyewash and flush for 15 minutes. Have someone else call OESO while you are flushing. Do not wait to see whether it starts to sting.

A spill you cannot clean up yourself

Leave the area, close the door behind you, warn anyone nearby, then call OESO on 919-684-2794. The spill kits are under the sink and in the dark room behind the sink.

Fire

Pull the alarm, leave by the nearest exit, and go to the meet point marked on the lab map. Do not use the lifts, and do not go back in.

Needlestick, cut or bite

Wash the wound, then call Employee Health on 919-684-3136 the same day. Tell Emma and Ryan. Same-day matters for exposure follow-up.

Anything that could have been much worse

Report it even though nobody was hurt. Near misses are how the lab finds a problem before it hurts someone.
